The range and variety of the types and uses of the Tarot can be bewildering for the Tarot student. There are many areas of the Tarot that can be categorised, but actually all these areas overlap. The totality of experience is important. I learned Tarot in a very unconventional way - I was reading tarot professionally the day after I purchased a deck. I did not know the cards, or their meanings, or how to use them. As you can see, this did not stop my thirst for knowledge. I could 'read' the cards immediately, but I was always wanting to know how this was happening. After twenty years I am still on this quest. Most people who want to read tarot start with books and lessons, with the view to be able to reading the cards for others. Unfortunately, many people who go on these courses lack confidence. Something is wrong.
It is easy to break down tarot into various aspects, such as the divinatory meanings, the lessons, the spreads, divination and magic. However, what can happen is that we have dismantled the tarot, but we do not know how to put it back together again. The key to learning Tarot is to do readings, no matter how little you think you know. Knowledge grows in your head, not in the cards. By all means start with the meanings or the lessons, or the spreads, but dip into all of them. Each of these aspects will bring something extra every time. If you know something of astrology, bring that knowledge into the studies. It is the expansion of knowledge within you that counts, and this will naturally be expressed in your knowledge of Tarot. Above all, enjoy. You are on a voyage of discovery about yourself, people you know, this world, and worlds beyond. Learning Tarot is a big step, so continue with lots of small steps. Go back over what you have learned, and apply the knowledge in different ways.
