Understanding the Relationship Tarot Spread
Establishing the Nature and Potential of a Relationship is not easy. This spread will give you the answers you need.
Relationship Spread and Elemental Dignities
Emily Peach's Tarot For Tomorrow, has a tarot spread which explores Elemental Dignities in relationships. She says about this spread:
This spread depends heavily on the proper use of dignity, suit and the rules of resonance and dissonance, and demands that the reader knows his deck very well and be capable of a proper synthesis of all the factors involved so that the elements of the relationship are seen in a proper perspective.
In other words, the elemental relationship between adjacent cards may be more important than the divinatory meanings of each card. Compatibility is the key to understanding here. Dissonant elements indicate stress, even if opposites do attract!

- Sexual compatibility
- Humour/Fun
- Potential of Lasting Friendship
- Temperament
- Intellectual Compatibility
- Emotional Compatibility
Pairing the cards horizontally is one method for analysing the reading. People who enjoy sex together can usually have fun. Temperament and friendship are good indicators of longevity. The last two cards explore how the relationship is perceived using thinking and feeling.
Exercises for relationship spread
One method for developing the reading is to do one for one partner, and another set of six cards for the other partner, and comparing position 1 with position 1, and so on, as well as within each set. You do not need to start with position 1 and work through to 6.
The elemental balance can be very interesting. You might find that one set is missing an element, while the other set has that element, and you will be able to see how the partner fulfils that missing element. This may explain why the relationship works.
