Why open my new tarot office on the 1st December?

For the last month my life has been in turmoil – I have known the lease on my seafront office in Brighton was ending in November, for nearly a year, but I had no idea where or when, or how I would find somewhere new. It was a journey into the unknown. Barely two weeks ago, and I was still clueless, but suddenly an opportunity came up in Camden Canal Market, near to Butterfly Tarot in Camden Lock Hall, London. I had to act quickly and three days later the contract was signed. I hoped to open a few days later, but delays kept things on hold.

The next day I was officially asked to vacate the seafront office… Something was up, but I had no idea what. The final day is the 1st of December, and I was hoping to make the transition several days earlier, but events conspired to delay proceedings. Now, this evening, I am waiting for Beryl to drive down to Brighton to pick up the furniture to go to its new home. The weather is cold – snow is falling, and likely to get worse, and I could see no significance, then this evening I received an email from Atlantis bookshop, and suddenly things made sense – there is meaning after all, and I doubt I could have planned things so perfectly.

So, what is so special about opening tomorrow in freezing temperatures and snow? The answer is simple – the 1st of December is the day Aleister Crowley died – known to afficionados as Crowleymass. I should have known! The perfect day to start a new tarot business, particularly for one who loves the Thoth Tarot deck. The omens look good.

Chris Huhne’s palm reading

A couple of years ago during the political conference season in Brighton, Radio 5live asked me to read a few palms at the Liberal Democrat Conference in Brighton. John Pienaar took me around the Grand Hotel looking for ‘victims’, and very qucikly we found Chris Huhne. At the time Mr Huhne was shadow for the Environment; as I was looking at his hands, John Pienaar was goading me about green policies, but what I was a powerful configuration of political fate coming up in a few years time, and that was what I focussed on.

Events in the last few days in the British election shows what that political fate might be. Chris Huhne was central to the negotiating team for the coalition with the Conservative Party.  As I type, there is a rumour that Mr Huhne’s portfolio could well be Environment in the new coalition government.

There is a joke about the Lib-dems never having to seriously worry about political office in the UK, and that was the case when I read those palms the expectation was that they would have no influence. How times have changed.

Bitten Nails, Gordon Brown and luck

LONDON - JUNE 7: Prime Minister Gordon Brown a...

Sometime ago I wrote on Gordon Brown’s bitten fingernails as a sign of weak intellectual skills. It is time for an update as Brighton will be welcoming Gordon and the ruling Labour Party to Brighton this weekend. The weather forecast suggests rising high pressure – it will be sunny and pleasant – and as a result Brighton will normally be full of people enjoying all that Brighton has to offer. If they do come they will be confronted with 3 miles of steel barriers, security services on high alert and very nervous riot police expecting trouble from a bunch of anarchists. As usual, apart from the bars, and the prostitutes well prepared with receipts that will pass muster at the expenses office in Parliament, and police bussed in from all quarters of the UK totting up their overtime payments (since there will be nothing to do otherwise), the good citizens of Brighton will, if they have any sense, leave. Unfortunately, I will be staying. Continue reading

Tarot Talk at Occulture 2009

I am going to do a ‘Cabaret Tarot’ at Occulture 2009 in London this Saturday. As well as doing some 3 card readings for the audience, I am going to talk about new directions tarot can take, and some of the projects I am working on at the moment.

Occulture gave me my first talk on the Tarot back in Brighton in 2004, and it was a time when my publisher first contacted me, which resulted in Tarot and the Magus. I also spoke at the Toronto Tarot conference that year.

Talking to an educated audience in magic and esoterica, can be a bit daunting, but I do enjoy the challenge.

Reading Tarot at Butterfly in Camden

I had not realised that I have not been keeping you up to date with Butterfly Tarot. We have now been open since April 2008, and we are getting busier. Butterfly Tarot is in the entrance next to Dingwalls nightclub. I am in the unit for about ten days a month, which usually means three or four days for the first three weeks of the month, and usually Wednesday to Friday of those weeks.

Beryl Stockman is usually there the other days for Tarot readings.

We are gradually adding stock, and now we have a selection of Tarot decks for sale, and books on Tarot, Astrology, and esoterica. Beryl is an artist, so she is keen to encourage artists with an esoteric vision.

If you want to make an appointment, you can phone me on 0791 863 7940. I am still available for readings in Brighton, so it is a good idea to phone and check where I am.
