Major Arcana 0-10

The first eleven tarot cards of the Major Arcana 0-10, start at the Fool and work through to Fortune, whose wheel turns to the return journey from 11 to 21. The list below gives keywords for these tarot cards

  • The Fool – new beginnings, sudden change. The Fool can represent the desire for rebirth, or making a new start to life, but with the proviso that the future path is not mapped out. He is Nothing and Everything.
  • The Magus – communication, self-expression. The Magus takes on the energies of the cards around him, and broadcasts that energy to all and sundry. The Magus makes deals. He tricks people. He says one thing and means another. He is a thief, but what is he stealing?
  • The High Priestess – change, fluctuation. The High Priestess has mysterious, fluctuating energies of the Moon. The emphasis is rhythm, change and movement. The cards around her will show this as instability.
  • The Empress – love, beauty. affection, sensuality, femininity, motherhood, fertility and creation. She is voluptuous, curvy, nurturing and caring. She cooks, bakes, keeps home, mothers you, and mothers everyone else.
  • The Emperor – The Emperor represents authority figures such as the Father, your boss, head of an organisation, or the alpha male. This is a person who gives orders. Don’t expect fun and frolicking when the Emperor appears.
  • The Hierophant – tradition, orthodoxy. Dogma, tradition and patriarchal society comes to mind when the Hierophant appears. At its best, he is a benevolent teacher, kindly and understanding.
  • The Lovers, choices, love, it  implies a doubt or hesitation in where a relationship is at. Is the right person for me? In our friends and partners we look for kinship, some kind of similarity, as this familiar.
  • The Chariot – control – the driver is in charge of the horses pulling the chariot. The card is about getting us to where we want to go, and in this context, it follows naturally from the choices made in the Lovers.
  • Justice or Adjustment demonstrates balance and harmony. Legal matters and serious relationships (marriage or business partnership) are also signified. People often look to fairness in their life.
  • The Hermit – introspection. Traditionally, the Hermit is about seclusion, withdrawal from society, as in a Monk or living in a hermitage.   • Fortune –  change in luck. Generally there is movement and transformation, but you have to look at the cards around it see where the change is coming from or going to.
